Blatantly Obvious

To describe the past few weeks as ‘a funk’ would be a serious understatement. Nothing has been clicking. There have been frequent periods of ‘intense fellowship’ (aka fighting) in our home. Miscommunication with others. Stress. Hurt feelings. Misunderstanding. Ugliness. Yucky. Blah.

What do you think is the cause of this? Who do you think wants there to be a wedge between a husband and a wife, between friends, between co-laborers in Christ?? Who do you think takes words, spoken or written, and wickedly twists them around and distorts them before they reach the intended recipient? Who plants irrational thoughts or creates paranoia?

I can tell you, in the past few days, it has become BLATANTLY OBVIOUS why we have been facing these kinds of struggles, darkness or ‘funk’! God has recently impressed upon our hearts to take THREE faith risks (TBA at a later time). Anytime God is leading you to commit to do something or surrender something to Him, the little snake comes along and tries to thwart the plans, and after the decision tries to dislodge the seed that has been planted. “The thief has come to STEAL and DESTROY” John 10:10, but JESUS “has come that (we) they may have life and have it in abundance.”

The more steps you take towards a sanctified life and/or towards obeying God’s calling on your life, the more you are willing to do for kingdom growth or steps you are willing to take to simply be in God’s will, the more resistance you will face. Press on, baby – ‘cuz if you’re in a wilderness, a MOVE of God is right around the corner!! Francis Frangipane says, “There is something about the time just prior to a move of God that causes many to wonder if the Lord is for them or against them.” I truly believe we are on the brink of a MOVE OF GOD in my home, in my church and in my community!!

Continuing on, Francis explains that this little wilderness season (funk) “has not been a time of punishment, but a season of preparation and of learning obedience.”

Kevin reminded us Sunday that our God is UNSTOPPABLE!! See Mt. 16:18, “And I also say to you that you are Peter, and on this rock I will build My church, and the forces of Hades will not overpower it.”

When we are in this funky wilderness, we need to open our eyes to the fact of WHO we are battling! “We must learn to war against the illusions and strife, the fears and jealousies that are sent from hell to divide us. If Jesus is eternally praying for our oneness, then we must recognize that Satan is continually fighting against it. The devil knows that when we become one with Christ and, through Him, one with each other, it is only a matter of time before this Jesus-built church will destroy the empire of hell!” F. Frangipane.

This is a battle that MUST be fought head on… on our knees! Let the power of the heavenlies tackle the powers of darkness. We already have the victory in Christ – we’ve already won the battle. Believe it. Claim it. Live it.

Being ReLeVaNt...

Was Jesus Relevant?

You hear the term “relevant” being tossed around these days – especially among church planters. The very phrase is favored, or is criticized. A few years ago, the catch phrase that was used (and criticized) was “seeker-friendly” – Jesus was that too… but that’s another blog, maybe. Relevant.

One of our core values at LifePoint is Changing Methods - Unchanging Message - We value creativity. God is the author of creativity – um, look at the universe :-). The message of the GOSPEL will never change, but times change and people change and cultures change. The message is relevant and unchanging from generation to generation, and our methods need to be relevant and in being so, must be ever changing.

Paul said that became all things to all people. Check out 1 Corinthians 9:19-23, “ 19 For although I am free from all people, I have made myself a slave to all, in order to win more people. 20 To the Jews I became like a Jew, to win Jews; to those under the law, like one under the law—though I myself am not under the law —to win those under the law. 21 To those who are outside the law, like one outside the law—not being outside God's law, but under the law of Christ—to win those outside the law. 22 To the weak I became weak, in order to win the weak. I have become all things to all people, so that I may by all means save some. 23 Now I do all this because of the gospel, that I may become a partner in its benefits.” That to me, my friends, sums up relevance. Kevin says (and other planter guys), “We’ll do anything short of sin to reach people.”

Jesus told stories (parables) about everyday “stuff” to make it relevant to them. He took what they knew, what the people were familiar with and adapted the unchanging message so the people would “get it.”

Randy Smith stated at the NEXT Church Planting conference that “relevance is a moving target.” That’s right on, Randy! What is relevant to me as a Caucasian, woman/mother of 3 kids in the Midwest may not be relevant to a single male from New York City and 10 years down the road, it’s going to look even more different.

Here are Perry Noble’s thoughts on a “Seeker Friendly” church… “SEEKER FRIENDLY - It amuses (and saddens) me when people use this as a term to attack the church–what in the heck are we supposed to be–seeker hostile? (Many churches are!!!) We believe people seek God because He draws them to Himself…and when they walk into our church we do try hard to make sure the environment is FRIENDLY! We want people to want to come back…and so we do all that we can, knowing that we will fall short if not for the mercy of God’s grace using our efforts for HIS glory!” The same goes for relevance. We want to meet people where they’re at… and let the gospel transform them.

I have to admit, this isn’t always easy on me… I, like most people, balk at change. I like certain things “how we’ve always done it.” But, it’s NOT ABOUT ME! Craig Groeschel asks the poignant question, “What if we forgot about ‘how we do it here’ and ask God how He wants it done?”

More it not being about me… In regards to music/worship - I like a variety of music, especially contemporary praise songs… however, if the pastor of my church (aka hubby) felt God leading him to change things up a bit to harder rock or rap, or even old-time gospel – because of the demographic we were reaching, I would embrace it. Again, it’s not about me. I’m already SAVED. I’m going to HEAVEN! And I’d like a lot more people to come with me!! (And I can praise 7 days a week, not just on Sunday mornings!!)

It’s like Henry Blackaby teaches, “See where God is working and JOIN HIM!” If he’s working among a certain people group – reach them with the gospel! Meet them where they’re at. Don’t try to get them to look like you – if God would’ve wanted cookie-cutter Christians, He would’ve said so… and we’d all be boring. (Stepping off soapbox now.)

Embrace diversity. Embrace change. And, embrace relevance.

Jesus did.

Repentance to Deliverance

What does it look like? Let’s start with deliverance

Well, I’ll let the children of Israel tell ya’… Exodus 15

I will sing to the LORD, For He is highly exalted;

He has thrown the horse and its rider into the sea.

The LORD is my strength and my song;

He has become my salvation.

This is my God, and I will praise Him,

My father’s God, and I will exalt Him.

The LORD is a warrior;

Yahweh is His name.

Deliverance is refreshing! Deliverance produces praise!! Deliverance ROCKS!!

How do we get there? Pray like David prayed in Psalm 51!

What does repentance look like? Our good bud Jaime commented on FB that many times people don’t repent, because they don’t know how or what it looks like. Let’s see if I can take a stab at this…

Repentance – according to dictionary.com –noun

  • -deep sorrow, compunction, or contrition for a past sin, wrongdoing, or the like.
  • -regret for any past action.

  • -The GREEK (yeah baby, playin’ the GREEK card!) metanoeĊ meaning to change one’s mind.
  • -"Repentance (metanoia, 'change of mind') involves a turning with contrition from sin to God; the repentant sinner is in the proper condition to accept the divine forgiveness." F. F. Bruce.

Alright, so you experience a deep sorrow for your sin, you regret it, THEN change your mind about it (from it’s ok to it is NOT ok) and TURN to God.

Sorrow => Change Mind=> Turn From It => Turn TO God (in a nutshell)

God doesn’t ask anything of us that He doesn’t provide even more instructions for. How do you turn from sin and how do you turn to GOD? Let’s see if God’s Word can help us along with that?

*COMMIT – Psalm 37:5 Commit your way to the Lord; trust in Him and He will act. Proverbs 16:3 Commit your activities to the Lord and your plans will be achieved.

*RUN – from sin, temptation and TO God. Make a clean break from those you used to hang with… Psalm 119:115. RUN from temptation like Joseph did.

*KNOW – that He LOVES you. Psalm 86:5 1 John 3:1 1 John 4:16 This is HUGE! He wants this for you more than anything!!

*BELIEVE – He’s not going to leave you. He is with you! You are NOT in this alone!

*FILL - Be filled with Him. Spend time with Him. Hear from Him by hanging out in the WORD. Talk with Him in prayer. Begin a daily quiet time, set aside for just Him to read the Bible and pray (it really is THAT simple) but talk with Him all day. Eph. 5:18 Psalm 119:11 Pray constantly.

*FELLOWSHIP – Go to a church (Heb. 10:25), surround yourselves with believers (aka good company, not bad 1 Cor. 15:33). Hang with those that want to follow hard after Christ.

If you don’t know where to begin, click on those verses. Read them. Let God’s truth settle in and work its way through your soul til’ you KNOW it and BELIEVE it. Trust in His goodness. Hang with some people who will help you along the way and KNOW that He loves you more than you can imagine. Oh baby, it’s so worth it to chase hard after God!

You will keep in perfect peace, the mind that is dependent on You

for it is trusting in You.

Isaiah 26:3

Take Me Out to the Ballgame!!!

This summer, we have embarked upon yet another new adventure... baseball/softball!! In the past, the kiddos played spring soccer, but this year everyone wanted to try baseball/softball.

Check him out! He's so intense... if that's not the cutest thing!!!

Joey is on a little league team that is coach pitched (by a machine thingy). He has mostly played center field - where he enjoys making designs in the sand with his cleats, watching cloud formations and occasionally chasing after a ball :p!
Daddy is his coach - which Joey LOVES!
Best part of the game - THE SNACK afterward!!
Did I mention he got his 1st HIT last week??!!??

Julia and Emma are on the same team (YEA!). This is their first year EVER playing softball and they jumped right into FASTPITCH - and they LOVE it!

I honestly can't believe how quickly they have caught on to things. They have a team of EXCELLENT coaches! Thanks Coaches!!
Julia has been pitching - and again, I just can't believe how well she is doing after just learning how!! Way to go JuJu!!

Emma has played 1st Base, Outfield and Shortstop. That girl can HIT the ball (she has some pipes, dude!) She's also a team encourager and chatter starter ;-).
Did I mention that Julia LOVES softball???

Nala - everyone's BIGGEST FAN!!

I won't lie, it's been crazy the past couple of weeks with games, but thankfully (or not, because we all enjoy it) it's a short season. Joey is done next week and the girls the week after. I love being a Mom - I love watching my kiddos in sports - and I love being in the sunshine and FRESH AIR!

Check out more pix of our summertime fun HERE.

Confession vs. Repentance

Like I said, I’ve journeyed on to Exodus in my daily Bible reading and it’s been interesting watching Moses’ progression from telling God, “NO!” and making excuses to beginning to see God, discover who He is (I AM), obey Him and see His purpose fulfilled through him (“that they may know there is NO ONE like the LORD our God” Ex. 8:10). It’s also been interesting to watch Pharaoh’s progression from telling God (through Moses), “NO! I will never let them (Israelites) go!”, watching the magicians imitate ‘miracles’ with their occult practices, to also being face to face with the fact that God let him live “for this purpose: to show you My power and to make My name known in all the earth” Ex. 9:16 Then, starting in vs. 27, Pharaoh confesses that he has sinned. He did the A of the ABCs of salvation (admitted he had sinned). He even did B (believed in God’s righteousness – remember, no Jesus yet) and in some ABCs did C (confessed). Here’s the problem… HE NEVER REPENTED! Maybe the ABC’s of salvation should actually be ABCR. Not quite as catchy, but the R is vitally important.

Like Pharaoh, I can confess my sins all day long – but if I never repent and TURN from them, I’m just going in circles!! I confessed my sins for years, growing up, going to church… but didn’t REPENT and make Jesus LORD of my life until May of 1997. There’s a HUGE difference! Even now, after being a Christian for 13 years, I still sin (SHOCKER!!) and if I don’t repent and turn from my sin… I’m no better off than before. Pharaoh admitted after the 7th plague (hail) that he had sinned. After the 8th plague (locusts) he urgently sought forgiveness for his sin. See, he wanted a way out of a messy situation. He was confessing his sins for his own good…

Have you or I ever done that? Have you (or I) ever been so disgusted with a situation, a mess that we’ve made, as a result of our own sinfulness that we confess it, hope to get forgiven… only to RETURN to it?? That’s not repentance!!! We want God to clean up our messes, because the mess stinks… but we’re not willing (at times) to take that extra step and make that extra commitment to REPENT and TURN from the sin!

I can say, “God I’m sorry I’m sleeping with my boyfriend. I know that I shouldn’t be doing that. Please forgive me.” Only to turn around and go right back at it when the temptation was ‘too much’ (forgetting 1 Cor. 10:13.)

Or say “God, I’m sorry for living beyond my means!” only to go further into debt because although I confessed the sin, didn’t turn from it.

Or “God, I’m sorry for my pitiful prayer life” never making any changes in my life to incorporate more time with the Father.

“Father forgive me for gossiping…”

“Lord, I confess my greed, my anger, profanity…”

Confession alone can - get something off you chest

- make you feel better about yourself

- think you’re doing something to make things better around you (thinking you have to ‘get right with God so bad things won’t happen or continue to happen, or to manipulate a situation to get better)

Repentance – -SETS YOU FREE!

-Brings forgiveness, salvation AND restoration! 2 Corinthians 7:10 “For godly grief produces a repentance not to be regretted and leading to salvation”

-Refreshes!! Acts 3:19 – “Repent and turn back, that your sins may be wiped out so that seasons of refreshing may come from the presence of the LORD.”

- brings GLORY to His NAME! Luke 24:46-47 says that, “Messiah would suffer and rise from the dead the third day, and repentance for forgiveness of sins would be proclaimed in His name to all the nations…

So what? Are we just going to sin, confess – sin, confess – sin, confess?? Shall we continue in sin so that grace may abound?? ABSOLUTELY NOT!

Yes, Jesus is right HERE waiting for us to confess. He is quick to forgive… and He is also faithful to walk us through the commitment of repentance should we truly want to turn away from our sin and turn to HIM.

2 Peter 3:9 - The Lord does not delay His promise, as some understand delay, but is patient with you, not wanting any to perish, but all to come to repentance.”

My friends, come (back) to Jesus:

*Admit you are a sinner

*Believe Jesus died for you

*Confess your sins and that He is LORD

And *Repent!!!

Summer of Service

Phew - ok - got a sec - so I'm gonna share some pix and quick details of what God has going ON in Findlay!!

LifePoint Gardens - There's this guy... Jon - who God brought to LP - Let me just say, he goes AFTER IT for God!

This is his 2nd year doing a Community Garden with some students from a local middle school and this year LP is joining him.

They weed, plant, water and take care of some crops and when they're ready... they are donated to people that need it and/or are sold at the Farmer's Market and the proceeds to go charity.
Thanks to Lawrence Farms for donating a half acre for this project!!
Jon was nice and bought everyone some fresh strawberries!! THANKS JON!
Check out more pix of LP Gardens HERE.

Invigorate Mission Team: This amazing group of college peeps from across the US stopped in Findlay last Monday to hang out and reach out. We joined them at Riverside Park to pass out FREE Dietsch's Ice Cream Cones, share a SMILE and invite them to LP. It was a GOOD TIME!! Pray for them, they're in a different city every day partnering with colleges and churches to see where God is working and JOIN HIM! YOU GUYS ROCK. For more pix of the INVIGORATE TEAM - CLICK HERE.

Carwash and a CONE! This was LP's 2nd year doing this event - just a way to LOVE on our community. This year we extended it to TWO LOCATIONS! People could come and get a FREE car wash (NO DONATIONS ACCEPTED) and on top of that each car got a coupon for a FREE one-dip cone to Dietsch's (world's best ice cream and CHOCOLATE!). I'll be honest, we didn't have as many cars as last year, but it was still a raging success - and we got show our community that we care - and don't want anything in return...

More pix from CARWASH AND A CONE! Next year - we may move it back to Sunday :-).

Concert in the PARK! We were invited by some sweet PEEPS to pass out ice cream at a Christian Concert that was held at Riverside Park on Saturday afternoon. Of course, we took them up on it!! We got rained on, but people enjoyed some (MORE) Dietsch's Ice Cream... and hopefully felt some Jesus LOVE!

Well, there you have it - last week in a nutshell... More to come... gotta run!! PEACE!

Broken & Beautiful

Broken

Sin hurts. Devastates. Destroys. Misleads. Divides. Breaks. Hurts. Yesterday I was so broken up about SIN and its affects on people I love and some I don’t even know personally – I could’ve just stayed in bed, curled up in a ball and called it a day. I HATE sin! Enough already! Come back, Jesus! My heart was hurting. I couldn’t get my mind off a couple of situations. Made me sad. No, not judging… all it takes is one glance away from Jesus for the waves of sin to overtake any of us, including and especially me. And for those who don't have a relationship with Jesus - well my heart hurts in a whole different way. Had to hang out extra with Jesus and let Him heal me of my ‘funk’. Perry Noble made a comment about sin that spoke volumes, “Things like this (SIN) should not cause us to force others away from the cross…but rather they should cause us to hold on to it tighter than we ever have!” We are nothing without Jesus – hold on tight to the cross, peeps!!!

Beautiful

The ‘beautiful’ is that we have a God that redeems, restores, and renews. A God that is waiting for you with arms wide open when you’re ready to come to Him (Luke 15:1-7) or come back to Him (Luke 15:11-32). A God who is quick to forgive when we confess and repent. A God who turns our ashes into beauty. A God who delivers. He won’t let us (believers) stay in our sin without being miserable – and for that He is to be praised!

How happy is the one whose transgression is forgiven, whose sin is covered! How happy is the man the LORD does not charge with sin, and in whose spirit is no deceit!

When I kept silent, my bones became brittle from my groaning all day long. For day and night your had was heavy on me; my strength was drained as in the summers heat.

THEN, I acknowledged my sin to You and did not conceal my iniquity. I said, ‘I will confess my transgressions to the LORD,” and You took away the guilt of my sin.

Many pains come to the wicked, but the one who trusts in the LORD will have faithful love surrounding him.

Be glad in the LORD and rejoice, you righteous ones; shout for joy all you upright in heart.

Zooplosion Challenge & Sharing

Here at LifePoint our KidsLife program uses Elevate Kids (and our Preschoolers use Elevate Jr.), an interactive Kids program where the kiddos learn one main point a week, based on a verse through exciting and adventurous themes... This past Sunday we started ZOOPLOSION! We're hanging out in some "Bible Stories through the eyes of the animals in the Bible and see how God always provides. Then we will see "what might have happened" and learn that things work out better when we follow God's plan." Fun music. Applicable lessons. Reinforcement games... Good stuff.

One thing I love about the Elevate program is the family devotional. Each week, the kiddos take home a family devotional that includes:
  • *Verses to learn with Mom & Dad/Guardians/Grandparents...
  • *Chapters of scripture to read... dig deeper into what they learned on Sunday
  • *Activities to do as a family to LIVE OUT what you learned
We decided to promote a Zooplosion Challenge to the families at LifePoint... that every week your family brings back the devotional with your family name on it and the activities checked off as complete, you'll be entered into a drawing at the end of the 8 weeks for a one year Toledo Zoo Membership (or, if your family already has a membership, we'll take care of your next renewal). You can get up to EIGHT chances to win!!! No, the real prize isn't the unlimited trips to the zoo, (seeing all the 'don't cares' - have to watch Zooplosion to understand that) of course, but that is an added bonus :-)! The real prize is helping families get into the WORD together and begin the incredible habit of family devotions. So many of us don't or didn't even know where to start a family devotion time... so here ya' have it... Zooplosion Family Devotional. LPers, email me if you didn't get this week's devotional, and I'll get it to ya'.

Kids Ministry Workers... If you work in a Kids ministry and would like to try Elevate to see if it's right for you and your ministry, email me and we'd be glad to share one of series (Starlight Station, Super Sports Spectacular, Kingdom Tales and Spychase) we've already used. We'll even cover the shipping (they're just CD/DVDs) as long as you promise to send it back ;-).

Decently and In Order

I love that God has those lines in 1 Cor. 14!! In vs. 33 it even says that, "God is not a God of disorder but of peace." This just shakes my windchimes! I THRIVE on order, on a schedule, disciplined. Now, the flip side of that, is that there are times/seasons that require flexibility, and God is continuing to do a work on me in that area - uh, you cannot be in ministry and/or raise kiddos without it. All in all, I work best when I'm well rested (get in bed early), well fed (up early with Jesus) and at least know what is on the schedule for the day. When those things are in order (rest, fed some sort of a schedule) I have peace.

All that to say, we have discovered GOOGLE CALENDAR as a family. WOOT! (WOOT! WOOT!) I have set up my igoogle to include our calendar, the weather, top news stories, my google reader (even twitter- just added it to it yesterday). But, most of all I <3 google calendar. We (Me, Kevin, Julia & Emma) each have our own calendar and each other's calendars show up on each other's calendars. (Joey doesn't have one yet... I have a handle on his schedule so far :-)). On our calendars we have Kevin's meetings/schedule, sporting events, church events, work schedules, babysitting schedules etc... and it's web-based (obviously) so we can access it anytime!! This may just be a little over-zealous for some, but it is right up my organization alley!! Best of all, it's FREE!

Do you igoogle??

Like Father/Like Son

Still hanging out in Genesis, and I couldn’t help but think when reading Ch. 26:7-11 – Like Father/Like Son. The Lord had just appeared to Isaac, with his own set of “I WILLS,” the same ones promised to his father Abraham. But, when Abimelech’s men asked about his wife, Rebekah, he just did what his father Abraham did years ago. He lied and said that Rebekah was his sister and not his wife. Instead of believing the promises in God’s “I WILLS”, he chose his own plan and almost made a huge mess out of things.

Have you ever seen your kids start some habit, use some expression or develop some characteristics that you clearly recognize… because it’s YOUR habit, expression or characteristic??? It’s going to happen! In my girls, I see one with a bubbly, extroverted personality (she gets honestly from both Mom and Dad) and I see another that is detail-oriented, organized – even perfectionist at times…

The reality check is when you hear something out of your child’s mouth, sarcasm, insults, negativity, borderline foul language… and you realize, “Uh! THEY GOT THAT FROM ME!” Yup, the truth of the matter is that we are passing down the good as well as the bad.

It goes both ways. Did you say before you were a parent that you would never do (fill in the blank) what your mother did… and years down the road, you say something and realize, “That was my mother!”? Yuppers, she passed that baby on to you.

I have wanted to be “Mommy” as long as I can remember and I LOVE being “Mommy.” Oh yeah, it’s hard work, I do need a break at times (we all do :p), but it is my dream job… my calling… my purpose. This week, with another end of the traditional school year around us, I was blazed with the fact that in only ELEVEN years, my youngest, my baby will graduate high school. Eleven years ago, eleven years seemed like a long time… but having recently celebrated a 15th wedding anniversary, and having a child about to turn 11 in September is a stark reminder of HOW FAST ELEVEN YEARS WILL FLY BY!

Isaac and Abraham’s example has struck a chord to be mindful of what we are passing down to our children. They see and mimic (whether consciously or sub-consciously) what they see and hear at home. Not only do we need to be diligent about planting seeds of righteousness in our children’s lives, but more importantly, we need to be planting seeds of righteousness in our own lives – and be a living example.

Do they see evidence of a vibrant relationship with Christ in you? Do they see you put Him 1st in your day? Do they see humility and repentance when you sin (this is HUGE, we sin, there’s no question of that, the question is what do we do after we sin)? Do they see you serving the Lord with gladness? Do they see strong faith or extreme anxiety? Do they see consistency or hypocrisy? Do they see you overextended and stressed, or balanced and walking in JOY? How do you handle stress? How do you handle conflict? How do you handle gossip?

They see all of this!

O Lord, create in me a clean heart, let me walk in the joy of my salvation and let your light shine through me that they (starting with my kiddos) may see Your good in me and You will be glorified!

“I have no greater joy than this; to hear that my children are walking in the truth.” 3 John 4

“Be imitators of me, as I also am of Christ.” I Cor. 11:1

“Be doers of the word and not hearers only, deceiving yourselves” (but not your kiddos). James 1:22
