Edit Below:
I quit my job.
Ok, that’s old news. But, God was leading me to slow down, so I asked Him, “Lord, what do You want me to get rid of in my life?” The answer in July was my job.
You’d think since I’m not working anymore, since I’m ‘home full-time’ that we’re leading this tranquil, serene, peaceful (um, redundant) life. Yeah - no.
There’s schoolwork, church stuff, kids’ activities, a marriage, household responsibilities, family time, ministry etc. ~ Responsibilities, sports/activities, even ministry are all good in and of themselves. There’s definitely positive aspects to each one. However...
James 4:8 says, “Draw near to God and He will draw near to you.” I got to thinkin’, if what I’m doing is keeping me from drawing near to God, it has to go.
There’s a lot of things I’d like to do, but I’m taking some time to “seek first” what He wants me doing… and then the rest will fall into place (Matt. 6:33). I’ve also been challenged:
- to realize “it’s not about me” (it’s not???)
- to examine my motives (is my goal accomplishment or approval?) and
- to evaluate my effectiveness – we can do a lot of things… but we can’t do a lot of things well.
God is using many fronts to challenge me in these areas.
One is the book “Crazy Love” by Francis Chan. No, this is not a book review… but this book is radically transforming my thought process in many areas, stretching my heart muscles and opening my eyes to God’s love for me and what it looks like when someone is CrAzY in LoVe with Him. This is a must-read peeps!!
Another venue God is using to nail down this principle in my heart are some blogs I’ve read recently. Interesting these blogs pop up when He is already stirring my heart – coincidence? I think not. Pete Wilson told Angie Smith at InCourage, ““We need to ruthlessly eliminate hurry from our lives.” Bam! That just about sums it up!
Finally, God continually uses music to speak directly to my core. I listen to it loud. It helps me HEAR it ;). Check out this Third Day Song about slowing down… Let me know what you think…
No, I don’t have the answers yet. Still seeking. I’ll prolly post when I do. How about you? How do you manage the chaos of life? How do you decide what stays and what goes?
So, He may ask us to slow down, but doesn't ask us to STOP (and if He did, I would... for a season). I can't imagine a life not serving the Lord, my family and sharing Christ with peeps around me. Guide our hearts, Lord!

Love that song....love the book too! We bought Crazy Love before we left in book form and downloaded it. Such a great book!! We are half way through.
Great blog friend. :)
OK - after thinking about it, here are some things we're going to try.
1) Listen to God (duh). If He's leading me to stop what I'm doing and pray, hug, chat, give etc... I want to do that
2) Go with the FLOW - Yeah, I'm a get-r-done type personality (can you say Type-A?)... but it's OK if some things don't get done. Take schoolwork for instance - if it's going to steal my love, joy, peace, patience, kindness and goodness - maybe it's time for a break. MY KIDS ARE GONNA FLIP!! Mom doesn't DO breaks :). Well, like I said, I'm going to give it a try!! I have no doubt that we do 'more than enough' school... but what about lovin' each other?? Well - I KNOW we need to do more of that!
3) Cherish the downtime - I enjoy the stuff the kiddos are in - but I heart the offseason! Today ends football - and that makes me SMILE!!
4) We already do this to a certain extent, but use GOOGLE Calendar. Kevin, Julia, Emma and I all have a google calendar. We can see what each other has going on (meetings, babysitting, sports etc), but we can also 'create an event', invite each other to it (ie. family camfire in the backyard) and stick to it. Intentional family time. It may be a sad state of affairs that we make an appointment for family time, but that blocks off that much needed time!! Kevin and I do that when we plan a date night as well.
Oh, and sometimes I turn off the phone... and the computer. Yeah, that helps... In fact, I'm going to do that now :) See ya'll this evening!!
I love that book! I love your post. And by Jesus, I love you too! :-)
When I begin my day or am about to say yes to some task, I first pray and ask "Will this matter a year from now? In the eternal scope of things, does this matter? Will this task accomplish my goals --> Jesus's will. "
If the task does merit attention, I THEN ask: "Do I personally need to do this? Could someone else do it (possibly better)? If I do it myslef, will I hinder someone else's development? " Then if it's me who should do it, I schedule it in - sometimes in chunks of time, based on priorities.
The Lord has really been talking to me about priorities. And getting it straight: Jesus first, hubby second, family third (including church family), church "life" fourth and career last. Umm... I have no official career now - I have a paying job that allows me to put the other priorities in line!
Awesome stuff!
K-
Love that, "Will this matter a year from now... or in light of eternity." That definitely puts things in perspective.
Oh, the fine art of delegation. I certainly don't want to hinder someone's development ;p, like robbing them of the blessing of _____ fill in the blank.
Thanks for sharing!!

OK, so I am ALL over this post.
First off, I just posted about how I am on the hamster wheel and I need to get OFF!
Secondly...you know I am a HUGE Third Day fan, so YIPPPPPPEEEEEEE on that!
Thirdly,...you also might know from visiting me that I am a big UNmedicated ADD mama so I have a hard time reading (retention issues), but I just ordered that book from Amazon and I am declaring that I will finish reading it.
So there you go......just the top three things that are spinning in my head right now.
